NURPH offers a fully funded, paid research experience where underrepresented high school students conduct novel research mentored by Northwestern University faculty and graduate students.
The Northwestern University Research Program for High Schoolers (NURPH) is a seven-week paid summer program designed to immerse underrepresented Chicago-area high school students in novel research within Materials Science and Engineering. Participants gain hands-on laboratory skills by working directly on faculty-sponsored projects, mentored by Northwestern University graduate students and professional researchers. The program emphasizes foundational STEM skills, data analysis, and technical writing through classes and workshops. Students also engage in professional development and college preparatory workshops, equipping them for higher education and STEM careers. The program culminates in a poster session where students present their research to the Northwestern Materials Science & Engineering community, as well as family and friends.
A typical week involves 25 hours of research and technical skills development, 5 hours of professional development, and 5 hours of Materials Science and Engineering education.
This program is ideal for rising high school juniors and seniors from Chicago and Evanston-area high schools who are interested in pursuing impactful STEM careers and gaining hands-on research experience.
