This program offers a free, immersive, six-week research experience at a world-class university, providing housing, meals, and a fellowship payment to accepted students.
The WYSE Young Scholars Summer STEMM Research Programs offer rising 10th-12th graders an authentic, six-week, in-person research experience at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Students engage in cutting-edge research alongside university faculty, post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate mentors. The program emphasizes hands-on activities in various STEMM fields, including artificial intelligence, cancer immunology, neuroscience, physics, quantum mechanics, bioengineering, and electrical engineering. Participants develop professional and college-ready skills through weekly seminars covering topics like college admissions, scientific communication, and research poster preparation. The program culminates in a final research symposium where students showcase their findings through poster presentations.
Students gain practical experience in formulating research questions, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and presenting results. They also have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and extensive university libraries. The program aims to foster confidence in students as future scientists, engineers, health professionals, and entrepreneurs, while also broadening participation in STEMM fields for traditionally excluded populations.
Students can expect a challenging 30-35 hour workweek, with daily interactions with mentors and regular guidance as they progress with their research.
This program is ideal for rising 10th-12th graders from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin who demonstrate academic excellence in science and math and are interested in pursuing a career in STEMM.
